Summer Days and Copper Walls

Inspired by recent sunny summer days, the gallery underwent a slight and spontaneous makeover. This change is not slight in appearance, however. Be your own judge and come check out the new copper paint job on the back wall of the shop. Maybe you'll be inspired to make a change yourself? Or to don some copper? Exciting new for local Flagstaff Jeweler, Sonja London-Hall: Her friend, Kara, and muse for her "Curly Girlz" jewelry line was the chosen applicant for an Oprah Winfrey "makeover."

Kara wore a Curly Girlz piece during the filming of the show, and also gave a piece to Oprah as a gift.

Local, Artist, Botanist, Peggy Pollak has the spotlight today. Peggy combines her botany and metalworking skills to create original jewelry cast in sterling silver. Below is her artist statement and a few of her items that are available at the gallery.

Artist Statement:
I was motivated to make jewelry when I could not find earrings that I liked. In response to requests from friends, I was soon making pieces to give away or to sell. I am inspired by Native American work, the colors and patterns of natural gemstones, and nature in general.

My work evolved from stringing and weaving seed beads to metalsmithing with sterling silver to casting silver, all with the brightest stones that I could find. I am continuing to hone my skills by working toward the jewelry certificate offered by Northern Arizona University.

My introduction to art actually occurred 20 years ago when I was a potter. At that time I took all the ceramics courses at NAU while working on my PhD in Botany. In the midst of my graduate work, my major advisor informed me that I didn’t have time to do both art and science and that I would have to choose. I chose science, but always intended to return to art when I had the time.

I currently divide my time among teaching Biology courses at NAU, mothering three children, and making jewelry. I love all three activities and feel that there is a certain synergy among them. In my spare time I garden, ride my horse, read, especially Southwest fiction, and enjoy the woods around Flagstaff.

In addition to showing my work in galleries, I have participated in a number of juried shows in Northern Arizona, Scottsdale, and Salem, Oregon.

INFLUENCES/ARTISTIC STATEMENT Steel is a magical medium to work with. When it is at a working heat (2000°F), it is the consistency of modeling clay and can be worked into all kinds of wonderful, flowing forms. When it cools, it returns to its rigid state and leaves you to wonder just how it could get into the shape it’s in. The final product can be both beautiful and durable, a work of functional art. Ironwork is enjoying a renaissance both in the public eye and in the number of individuals interested in working the metal. Therefore, there is quite a bit of creative energy flowing in our medium, a challenge and stimulation to create new work.

Cathi will be in the gallery during this coming First Friday Artwalk, so stop by to chat with her and see some of her new work!

Also in the gallery this First Friday will be live dancin' music played by Craig Yarbrough, and a free wine tasting provided by Kind Vines. Hoo-wee!

Milly is a Swiss born jeweler, who has lived in Flagstaff, Arizona for over 30 years. She specializes in hammered jewelry. Her designs make a strong statement while emphasizing the feminine. Each piece is handmade by the artist. Most of the sterling silver that Milly uses has been refined from recovered silver, and the copper is 99.9% pure, while many of the semi-precious stones in her work are hand cut.

Brandy's Restaurant is having a show of three chosen artists from our gallery for the month February, 2010. The show has George Averbeck's hand blown glass, Cathi Borthwick's fire forged metalwork, and Stacy Mark's mixed media paintings. Arizona Handmade Gallery has been showing the work of hand selected artists in Northern Arizona since the Spring of 2000. Located in the Historical Downtown in the Nackard Building, the gallery has been home to some of the areas best artists over the years. Cheers to ourselves for 10 years running!
